Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Sorry, I'm At It Again: Anniversary Show From '79....Wow (it's bonafide)

Yep, I’m still in the same year with today’s anniversary show.

11/9/79 Rochester War Memorial: http://www.archive.org/details/gd79-11-09.sbd.stern.318.sbeok.shnf

This show stacks up easily with some of the other Fall 79 monsters. Powerful and engaging from the start, it is a fine example of the boys kicking into high gear and running over anyone and anything in their way. The quality of this SBD is excellent, everyone is crystal clear and especially Phil who, while not dominant, rumbles away perfectly just under the surface. The first set hops all the way through, the highlight being a huge Jack Straw closer. Wow. A real gem. The second set, like the rest of this tour, smokes like few others. With a set-list that starts out almost identical to the first night of Cape Cod a few shows earlier, it maybe doesn’t elicit much excitement at first glance, but once you’ve heard it, it easily holds it own against that show. The Dancin’ opener is gorgeous, not quite as huge as Cape Cod, but still way, way above average. It then moves effortlessly into Franklin’s, more so than the Cape Cod segue IMHO. The Franks, again in my opinion, is superior to Cape Cod’s, with Jerry just ripping it up. In one section, Jerry almost coaxes Brent into taking a brief solo on the Hammond, where we get a glimpse of the confident powerhouse he eventually becomes, and then takes over and just destroys the place. It then moves nicely into a very powerful Estimated, again with Jerry displaying all his talents. The Estimated moves ever so sweetly and gently into He’s Gone, delicate and powerful at the same time. The He’s Gone post-jam is a true thing of beauty, moving into a Gloria-tease that must have caused mass-salivation in the arena. From there, it still doesn’t let up, with a post-Space lineup of Wharf Rat>Miracle>Bertha>Good Lovin that rock the house to say the least. The Johnny B. Goode encore is amazing, Jerry playing it like it was a First Set opener, full of energy and fire. Can’t miss with this one folks.

Just finished going through the Dancin again. Now I realize I first said here that it doesn't quite match the one from Cape Cod a few days prior, but now I'm not so sure. Now while a touch shorter, it packs the punch of a steamroller being driven by a loanshark on crack. Damn, I would have to say that it is AT LEAST as good, if not better. Another thing I love about these dudes: even when listening to a show for the umpteenth time, I'm always hearing new things and forming new opinions. Color me happy.

Are you referring to this line:
"Not only that, it will take the 10/27 out behind the tool shed, tell the sorry show to go out into the woods and pick the biggest stick it can find and bring it back. When the show returns with this large stick, 11/9 will then beat the crap of 10/27 with the tool shed." ?

I hate people with good memories.

NOTE: the referred to post was written under one of my nom de plumes, SDH2O. This was during the whole "2" fiasco.

damn, i'm streaming away and working and all of the sudden the lazy ligthin' (a song I can often do without - sorry) just got me rockin - if it picks up from here, hot damn.

I was reading the gans book playing in the band last night (not really a book, but snippets of comments woven together) and it's interesting the comments about brent's addition to the band. how they were looking for "color" after keith and really felt brent gave them a fuller "palette" of sounds. this show indicates they were on to something...

and funny, but it seemed like it took forever for deadheads to accept brent... right about the time he was gone

Okay, now I am confused, not that confusing me is a difficult task. I started up the show from the link you supplied and the Johnny B Goode is the first track and is not listed as the encore on the show or at deadlists. Based on the organ it must be Brent but probably not from this show. Regardless if this was an encore, you are correct they are rockin' it like it was an opener.

I think the JBG is the encore as at the end of it Bobby says "Thank you. Goodnight".

yeah, I heard that after I finished typing. I guess the question is what show was an encore from. The encore from this show is US Blues.

You know, if you subtract our cumulative IQ from your favorite year, you will find yourself in my favorite year. Not sure how you do your arythmetik when selecting a show, but keep it in mind if the "year" police get after ya.

Whewww...well, that's a start; if we added in Dire, we wouldn't have gotten out of 1979.

Interestingly this show and specifically this second set is a major part of that new Road Trips release. Between Disc 1 and the bonus disc you get the entire second set.

oh and the show was in Buffalo not Rochester. Not sure it would have mattered weather-wise.

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: First "Gloria" jam

Buffalo 11/9/79 is a superb show -- perhaps the best of the tour. This show features a feisty Phil-and-Bob-led "Gloria" jam out of "He's Gone" and into "Drums." Though DeadBase dubs the "Gloria" jam out of "He's Gone" from the Stanley Theatre 12/1/79 the first (and last) version, that's clearly wrong. This is the first.

"Road Trips Vol. 1, No. 1" notwithstanding, I strongly urge all dedicated listeners to obtain a full, lossless version of this show. I have the lossless soundboard if anyone needs a copy.

Best to all,
deadhead66

P.S.: I should be receiving "Road Trips Vol. 1, No. 1" with the bonus disc sometime next week. Once I've listened to it, I will be happy to comment upon it should anyone want to know whether it's worth purchasing.

I am very Dead Library Challenged. A Copy of anything would be greatly appreciated. I would pass along any other dupicates to other brother in need, while also passing along the favor of blanks to senders- since the missus is paranoid about security with torrent style I haven't learned to do it. Old fashioned trades, anyone?

A year later: Yep, make that community war memorial in buffalo. my old tape was labeled as rochester and it has stuck in my mind.
